Reflecting on my contributions to learning in 5317 & 5315

As I reflect on my contributions to learning in 5317 and 5315, I realize that this time of year is very difficult to do accelerated grad work with the demands of my new job. Not only did this busy time of school year supporting principals with academic achievement plans, school based budgeting, master scheduling, staffing, state assessments, and the regular demands of the job make time scarce, I also came down hard with Covid in the middle of this course. In hindsight, I think this time of the school year would be a time to not take classes so that I can be one hundred percent focused on my work and not let myself get run down. In the end, I am proud that I kept pushing through and never gave up on my graduate school studies, while also doing my professional job to the best of my abilities. I do give a ton of credit to my core group that has formed over the past several courses for being my cheerleaders and encouraging me to keep going. Not only do we clarify assignments and provide feedforward on attempts, we also have developed friendships that truly care about one another and build each other up when we need it most.

I was also assigned to be a discussion member of group 2 (in 5317) with
Tawanna C., Carl D., Sarah E., and Davina F. This was a new experience for me, and would have been more beneficial in my first courses when I didn’t know anyone yet. This worked fine, but I have grown close to a core group (Tonya L., Kelly S., & Vallerie P.) that works together on everything, so I still worked with them as well. This core group that developed organically is more comfortable to be vulnerable with and flexible with time to collaborate. We also support each other across all courses, because we are not all on the same pace to graduate. This has been beneficial for insight, experience, and perspective sharing. For the course discussions, I did interact with my assigned group (5317), but prefer the method of reading everyone’s posts and responding to any that interest me or have commonalities to my innovation plan or current work. I was able to do this in 5315 where we didn’t have the assigned groups. I was excited to connect with a peer, Veronica L. G., that is implementing station rotation blended learning in a second grade classroom from the 5315 course discussions. We are planning to stay in touch because of how closely aligned our topics of research are. Depending on when my core group posted (5317), I responded to at least two members on each discussion thread. I also started a “feedforward thread” in our class messages, that a few of us took advantage of as a space to share links and share thoughts with each other. Sarah was helpful in this group to respond and collaborate with.

As far as revising assignments, I didn’t receive too many ideas for feedforward in either class. I did put links out there for the entire learning community to see if anyone could provide feedforward, but I often just received kind thoughts of a job well done. I know my work can always improve, so I did go back and look at all learning assignments to review them and made changes to improve them where possible. I also took the advice to create assignments in formats that are easily editable so I can continuously go back, update, and improve. The one thing I left was a filter on my video in 5317, as I was sick and I really don’t like the way I look in my video. The filter made me feel more comfortable. One example of utilizing feedback/feedforward was on my publication in 5317. I was able to clarify a few paragraphs and add some details to make the narrative easier to follow. Another, from 5315, was with my literature review having some APA formatting errors in the body setup. I was also able to change the format of my final action research plan to a narrative after collaborating with Vallary P. and confirming format with my professors. My crazy unique brain thought I would share my plan as a presentation, so I still included some of the slides as visuals on my final compilation post. Having the permission to continuously improve has been a wonderful experience at Lamar.

Below are some pictures of my leadership within my group to connect us and provide a space to share thoughts and feedforward with each other.

I appreciate the flexibility of the course professors and the “do at your own pace” set up. This allowed me to meet the various course activity deadlines and read, watch, and respond to course materials late night after my kids were in bed, and on days and times that I had a chunk of time to myself. I met all course assignment deadlines for 5317, but after I got sick with Covid, it was very hard to catch back up, and my last discussion posts were not timely, but I did get in there and explore the course materials and interact with my discussion group to contribute to the learning of my colleagues with deep and passionate thoughts, using APA formatting when needed. In 5315 I reached out and received an approved extension on my literature review, and was able to actively participate in all class discussions, using APA when needed. Outside of class, I continued collaborating with classmates via email, messages, discussion board, #GroupMe (entire ADL cohort), and text threads to communicate with my colleagues to support each other on our learning journeys.

These courses were good to have at the same time because I was able to focus more on communicating my innovation plan and the implications of implementation of the plan. learn how to write for publication in one and develop an action research plan for the other. Once my action research plan is complete, publishing the study to share with a global audience would be amazing! I know have the understanding of how to take on submitting for publication for any future work I would like to share.
