1-to-1 Device vs. Culture

There is much controversy around the 1-to-1 device initiative many districts jumped into during the pandemic. Does giving every learner a device really make a difference? I believe there is much more to the equation. The culture of the learning community needs to fundamentally shift to elevate best practices of authentic, personalized, anytime, anywhere learning to move the achievement needle and accelerate and deepen the learning experience for all learners. Simply giving a device doesn’t automatically equal higher achievement.

I can speak to the experience I have had at my school in a large urban district with 1-to-1 devices leading up to the Covid 19 pandemic. We had five years of professional learning including 1-on-1 coaching, professional learning communities, and conferences to embrace collaboration, sharing ideas, safely taking risks, celebrating, and shifting the culture prior to the pandemic. This took time, and educators evolved at their own pace. We embraced each individual on their own journey.

After this experience, I can’t imagine the thousands of educators and scholars who went 1-to-1 during the pandemic and were expected to work their magic! It doesn’t happen over night just by simply giving everyone a device and internet. This shift takes time and ultimately building great educators who utilize the devices to personalize, accelerate, and provide experiences and opportunities to learn and apply the knowledge gained.
